Is Having the House Number 13 Really Unlucky?

According to FindaProperty, following their extensive analysis of property sales data for the past 10 years, UK buyers are extremely superstitious when it comes to finding a home, with 32% fewer homes sold on the 13th of the month than any other day.

It would appear that buyers have avoided properties and sales with any connection to the number 13, to the extent that sellers living at no. 13 can expect to receive £6,511 or 3% less when selling their property than those who live at a different number. In addtion, FindaProperty state that there have also been 34% fewer properties sold with the no. 13, than those numbered 1 - 12 and 14 - 30. Over the past 10 years, 144,789 no. 13 properties were sold compared to 239,716 no. 12s and 222,127 no. 14s.

Samantha Baden, property analyst at FindaProperty, said: "Buying a home is a huge investment so it's no surprise that people want everything to be just right - including the day of purchase. The fact that buyers avoid the number 13 is a trend that has been evident for the past 10 years, so there's no reason to think that this year will be any different. Many people believe Friday the 13th to be one of the most unlucky days of the year".

Kate Faulkner, Property Market Analyst and Commentator, says it's much more important to find the house or flat of your dreams than worrying too much about the house number, and if you find a property that's perfect for you and your family in every other respect, don't discount or avoid it just because of it's number! However, if you feel it's a real problem, some property developers have been known to build housing estates and roads missing out number 13, and there's a good example of this in a village in Essex where the houses jump from number 12 to 14 within the cul-de-sac!
