Writing a home book can be quite easy. If someone is a writer and they want to find out about home books, all they need to do is order other authors' home books, do some research on the internet, and hey presto, a new home book is written!
Kate Faulkner, author of six home books, MD of Designs on Property and well known speaker and trainer to the home industry and consumers says "Lots of home books include information that has been regurgitated from the internet or from other writers' books" she finds "many times, I'm amazed that they don't even try to ‘hide' it, but just copy out what someone else originally wrote pretty much in the same format it was originally written in, perhaps mixing up the titles a bit".
To Kate, writers that produce home books or home information on-line without having worked in the industry or without the right checks make a lot of mistakes and can be misleading. Kate says, "the problem is a lot of information that needs to go into a home book is either time sensitive so dates very quickly, or has to be checked by current experts. With perhaps three months or more lead times to publishing, you have to know what's coming, not just what's available now".
A good example cited by Kate is finance and especially mortgages. "When I started writing about finance, everyone used to write about the ‘thousands of mortgages available'. Having worked with finance experts who organise mortgages every day, I found out they used to get quiet frustrated about this. In fact there were only ever two types of mortgages: repayment and interest only. I then worked with experts to write better information which included the different ways you can pay interest on a mortgage. These are ordered in a specific way to help readers ‘follow' the path of different types of interest and build their knowledge after reading each one. When someone takes the information and regurgitates it, firstly, they appear to swap the titles about, so it doesn't read properly and secondly few get it checked with an up to date, fully compliant, qualified mortgage expert. Without these essential checks, things can easily be written incorrectly!"
