Illegal Rent
Q - We are renting a small cottage, have been in the property for a year and have paid two lots of £3,000 up front. We recently received a new contract requesting 18 month's rent up front in addition to the payments we have already made. Is this legal?
A - This does sound very odd - we'd need to know more about the type of contract you are on. For example, we assume it's a short assured tenancy agreement? Can we ask why you are paying upfront? This type of payment is usually for people who have a problem with their credit or are from overseas so it would be difficult to secure monies against you.
To really answer your query, the contract would need to be checked with a legals lettings' specialist. Effectively a contract is what's agreed between you and we'd need to see what clauses where in the contract which would allow/not allow them to do this.
There are three alternatives. READ ON FOR THE FULL QUESTION AND ANSWER.
