Buy and Sell a House when moving due to Relocation of Office or New Job
When moving for a new job or relocation of your office, it's going to be stressful! Your family may not want to move, the new job is likely to be a promotion and you have to get to know new people and learn the ropes too, so make sure you take a sensible approach to moving home and check what alternatives are available.
Firstly check with the company to see what relocation support they will give. Some give you some days off and that's it, others a cash lump sum while larger companies are likely to have a comprehensive relocation policy which offers both money and a helping hand from relocation experts. You may even get your version of Kirsty and Phil from Location, Location, Location to help you find a new home!
Secondly, make sure you actually need to move in the first place. As remote working increases in the UK, or if you have a job where you tend to travel alot anyway, many people are now deciding not to move their family at all, but to rent somewhere or stay in B&B accomodation for a few days a week. Although it might be tough at first to be away from your family, this can be a great ‘interim' measure which allows you to settle into your new job or office location and then you can decide at a later date whether you want to continue or move the family closer to your work.
If working away isn't practical, there is still no need to jump into buying and selling. You can let out your own home in the short term and rent a new one nearer to your job. Although this might have some cost implications, your work might help with the bills and better still, you and the family will have time to get to know the new area and decide at your leisure where you'd like to live.
So, if you are starting a new job, take it step by step. Invest your time in the new job first, ideally without uprooting the family. Make sure it's the right move for you, then take your time to decide whether and where to buy and sell.
