When should you buy if you are having a baby?
Is it a good time to buy a house?
Having a baby is one of the main reasons that people buy a new house. Your family is now growing and things like where your child will go to nursery then school becomes increasingly important.
However, most move during pregnancy and Kate Faulkner, MD of independent property advice site Designs on Property says this really isn't a good idea, especially in the current difficult moving market.
Ideally, according to Kate, make sure you move to your new home prior to having a family, or wait until after the little one has been born. "Moving home is a stressful experience" says Kate. "It takes around 3-4 months to buy a home and can take between 5-12 months to sell, so the likelihood is if you try to move when you are pregnant at some point there will be a problem". For example, a third of sales fall through after an offer has been made, Kate says "the problem is you are three to six months pregnant, you think you've sold your own home or secured another because offers have been accepted only to find your dream move has now fallen through".
So for those that are buying because you have an expanding family, or selling and buying to move to a bigger home, it's vital to do so when the stresses and strains of family life are sorted, rather than trying to move during a happy, but potentially strained time.
